Workshop Wrap – It’s Beetlemania!

Farmers and community members joined us recently for a short but engaging workshop all about one of agriculture’s smallest and hardest-working helpers, the dung beetle!

Project Officer, Jourdyn, led the session, introducing participants to the fascinating world of dung beetles and the important role they play in farming systems. From burying dung and improving soil structure to cycling nutrients and helping keep pastures productive, these tiny insects deliver some impressive benefits beneath the surface.

During the workshop we explored the different dung beetle species found in our region, the behaviours that help them break down dung, and the signs landholders can look for to identify beetle activity in their paddocks. Participants also learned simple ways to monitor beetle populations on their own properties.

While small in size, dung beetles can have a big impact on soil health and pasture productivity. Understanding how they work and how to support them can help farmers make the most of this natural tool within their farming systems.

This event forms part of our Dung Beetle Soil Health Initiative Project, which is managed by Southern Forests Community Landcare and Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee. This project is also supported by funding from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
